The Altar Book offers a one-of-a-kind collection of color photographs of rare beauty. This extensive project to document Afro-Brazilian altars began in 1987. Now it seems complete and it seeks closure as a 40 to 80 plate publication of stimulating texts and visually vibrant images.

The introduction is written by Liza Papi, a curator based in New York and a Professor of Art History at St. John’s University. Papi is a published author on aesthetics and art. Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, she earned her BA from the State University of Rio de Janeiro. After moving to New York, she attended CUNY, where she received a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Engraving and a second Master’s degree in Art History and Museum Studies. Papi is currently completing her PhD at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) in Portland, Maine.

Her first curatorial position was at the Rosenberg Art Gallery in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, she has curated numerous exhibitions, including a group show featuring Peter Kloehn’s Altar Photos at St. John’s University in New York.
